Fazilka: In a major embarrassment for the Home Department of the state, Fazilka police on Thursday showed its brutal face to a 47-year-old man Vikram Sethi in full public view as the cops presumed him to be a 22-yr-old youth bearing a similar name. The police would have succeeded in their move to downplay their illegal exercise had the man not ended up in the local hospital with severe injuries.
The victim and his family members now demand suspension of the police team involved in the illegal exercise, mentioning along with that the damage of this kind was beyond any compensation. According to sources, the police barged into the house of a landlord, Vikram aka Vicky, and without listening to what he had to say, roughed him up, accused him of raping a 15-year-old girl, and dragged him to the police station while beating him on the way.
Fazilka SP Dharamvir accepted the mistake made by the police personnel and said that appropriate action would be taken against those found guilty of negligence in not checking the credentials before taking action. He said that a complaint of rape was lodged by a girl against Vikram Kumar, a 24-year-old youth, who had still not been apprehended. The house of Vikram was identified by the complainant, he maintained.
The police, led by sub-inspector Banta Singh, barged into the house and asked Vikram to accompany them to the police station. Taken aback and without a clue about what was happening, he refused to accompany them. On hearing this, the police personnel applied force, dragged and beat him up, unmindful of the ramifications. It was too late by the time realisation dawned on them. The beaten and bruised man was still in the hospital getting treated for his injuries. Later, speaking to mediapersons, the victim demanded suspension of the cops involved.
