Kapurthala: Sultanpur Lodhi in Doaba is likely to witness strong triangular contest with candidates from Indian National Congress (INC), Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the fray.
During last assembly elections former Punjab finance minister Upinderjit Kaur was defeated by Congress candidate Navtej Singh Cheema who secured 47,933 votes to register his first victory with a margin of 4,298.
With the announcement of Arjuna awardee Sajjan Siingh Cheema as AAP Candidate from Sultanpur Lodhi not only made a hard time for sitting Congress MLA Navtej Singh Cheema to get party ticket easily, rest being Jat votes in Sultanpur Lodhi which constitute nearly 34 per cent of total votes in this constituency is expected to be divided among these two contestants which may give an edge to SAD candidate Upinderjit Kaur.
The Congress high command is contemplating about its other aspirant Harminder Singh who supposedly has close ties with PPCC chief Captain Amrinder Singh. Moreover, AAP had strong a hold from this constituency in its last parliamentary election when its then AAP candidate Bhai Baldeep Singh gained nearly 22,000 votes – about 15 per cent of the total votes.
Statistics state that since 1962, candidates from SAD and Congress fought on this seat eleven times against each other of which SAD won the seat seven times while Congress candidates were declared victorious four times.
