University Grant Commission (UGC) has accorded second time autonomous status to Mata Gujri College(MGC), Fatehgarh Sahib being run by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee(SGPC).Mata Gujri College was first college of Punjab, which was accorded autonomous status in 2010. The UGC authorities have recently sent a letter to college principal Dr Jatinder Singh Sidhu in which it was informed that UGC in its meeting considered the report of Expert Committee constituted by the UGC, which visited the college affiliated to Punjabi University, Patiala.
On the basis of the recommendation of the Committee, UGC has agreed to confer autonomy to the college from the year 2016-2017 to 2021-2022. MGC had accredited ‘A’ Grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous institution established by the UGC. As per college principal Dr Jatinder Singh Sidhu, UGC’s committee had visited the college on August 16-17 for the inspection of academic facilities, infrastructure and assessment of fulfillment of criteria in terms of programmes, faculty. “Only 575 colleges all over India have this status,” he added.SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar, who is ex office president of the college managing committee said it is matter of pride that MGC had accorded autonomous status second time.
Eminent educationist and Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib vice chancellor Dr Gurmohan Singh Walia, who had served as principal of Mata Gujri College from March 1, 1994 to October 31, 2009 had played a very important role sin getting autonomous status for the college said under the National Policy on Education(1986-92), an autonomous college will have the freedom to determine and prescribe its own courses of study and syllabi, and restructure and redesign the courses to suit local needs; prescribe rules for admission in consonance with the reservation policy of the state government; evolve methods of assessment of students, performance , the conduct of examinations and notifications of results ; use modern tools of educational technology to achieve higher standards and greater creativity ; promote healthy practices such as community service, extension activities, projects for the benefit of the society at large, neighborhood programmes, etc. He said Parent University accepts the methodologies of teaching, examination, evaluation and the course curriculum of its autonomous college.
