Malerkotla: A day after the incident of desecration of Quran near Baba Bodle Shah Dargah at Jarg Chowk here, an uneasy calm prevailed over the townon Sunday. The Muslim groups postponed their protest following the instructions of Mufti-e-Punjab Irtka-ul-Hassan. He had urged the Muslims not to protest in this holy month of Ramzan as it would enhance difficulties for those who are fasting.
Meanwhile, the police have booked an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader for staging a dharna at the chowk and leading a mob towards the house of local SAD MLA Farzana Alam. While the police remained silent on the issue, AAP MP Bhagwant Maan said they would meet the higher authorities for an independent inquiry into the incident. On the other hand in response to the call given by Shahi Imam (Punjab) Mulalan-Habib-ur-Rehman to observe the last “jumma” as black Friday, Izhar Alam, Chairman of Punjab Wakf board and Chairman of Imarat-e-Shariya, said that the police would definitely arrest the culprits before Friday and there would be no reason to observe black Friday. He further said if police failed to arrest the culprits before Friday then he would urge the people not to follow such statements that could disturb peace. Izhar Alam also organised a press conference at his residence and condemned the political statements issued by Punjab Pardesh Congress Committee president Amarinder Singh regarding the incident.
