Union minister of state for social justice Ramdas Athawale has yet another strange demand. He now wants SC, ST reservations in the Indian cricket team! The minister, who was in Nagpur, said that the national cricket body BCCI should provide reservations to SC and ST sportspersons to give them equal opportunity in the game.“There is no harm in giving a 25% reservation to these two categories,” he said, and added that this could encourage players from the two sections to do even better when they get a chance to play at national and international levels.
He also went on to say that if there had been reserved quota in the team, we might have beaten Pakistan in the Champions Trophy final.Well, clearly this is jumping the gun. If cricketers are chosen on anything other than merit to play for the country,it won’t be fair to the fans who are behind Team India when it takes the field. Sorry, but for now, to find a place in the side, earn it the hard way for there is no short cut to success.Athawale said the Goods and Services Tax (GST) was the best thing that could happen in the country. Athawale was in Parliament on June 30 night when President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled GST.
