Remembering Neerja Bhanot on her 30th death anniversary.

Today is Neerja Bhanot’s death anniversary. She died saving the lives of hundreds. Neerja Bhanot was an Indian model and purser for the airline Pan American World Airways, based in Mumbai, India.

Bhanot was born in Chandigarh, India, and brought up in Mumbai in a Punjabi familyShe was the daughter of Harish Bhanot, a Mumbai-based journalist, and Rama Bhanot.

 


 

She had two brothers: Akhil and Aneesh Bhanot.  She was a huge fan of actor Rajesh Khanna .

Bhanot had an arranged marriage in March 1985 and joined her husband in Doha, Qatar. She was abused by her husband for dowry and she returned to her parents’ home in Mumbai within two months. She appeared in many commercials and print addvertisments.
Later she appeared for flight attendent job with Pan Am .

On 5 september 1986, Bhanot was on duty on Pan Am Flight 73 flying from Mumbai to the United States.The aircraft was carrying 365 passengers and 19 crew members.
At Karachi airport in Pakistan , all of a sudden 4 armed men barged into the aircraft and hijacked the aircraft.

The hijackers opened fire after 17 hours, prompting Neerja to open the emergency door .
She could have escaped first but chose not to .

Instead of this she helped the passengers escape. She was shot while saving 3 children from the terrorists bullets .
Neerja is the only lady to be honoured by Government of India with Ashok Achakra Award .She lost her life trying to save passengers on Pan Am Flight 73 .

She became the youngest recipient of India’s highest peacetime award for bravery, the Ashok Chakra Award.A square called Neerja Bhanot Chowk in Mumbai, Maharashtra has also been named after her. To honour her bravery, the Indian Postal Service released a stamp commemorating her. .

Her life and heroism inspired a biopic released in 2016; Neerja, directed by Ram Madhvani. She was shot while helping passengers escape through the emergency exits.We need more brave souls like her. We all miss you Neerja .
