Rural Punjab declared open defaecation free: Razia Sultana. All rural areas of Punjab have been declared open-defaecation free (ODF), state water supply and sanitation minister Razia Sultana said here on Sunday. She said her department had been able to get all rural areas of the state —13,726 villages in 22 districts — declared ODF under ‘Swachh and Swasth Punjab Mission’.
“Cross verification of ODF status in these villages is under progress,” she said, according to press release issued by the state government.
Sultana said under the flagship ‘Tandarust Punjab’ mission, the department of water supply and sanitation had been entrusted to supply safe water, reduce open defecation and regularly monitor water quality in rural areas. She said the department had launched a behavioural-change campaign to sensitise people about the ill effects of open defecation and create a demand for safe sanitation.
