Using mobile phone is considered to be one of the most dangerous things you can do while driving. A survey in Indian cities revealed that nearly 47 percent people have received calls on their mobiles while driving and 94 per cent people believe that it’s a dangerous thing to do. Yet most of us continue to do it.Japanese car manufacturer Nissan came up with an inventive way to keep people away from receiving calls and texting while driving. The company has used, in their own words ‘Victorian Era’ age technology. The company has built a compartment within the car’s armrest to hold the phone which creates a ‘silent zone’ blocking all incoming and outgoing connections. Users can’t receive cellular, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signals and hence no notifications. Nissan calls it the Signal Shield concept. It is actually a Faraday Cage built in the armrest. A Faraday cage or Faraday shield is an enclosure used to block electromagnetic field. A Faraday shield may be formed by a continuous covering of conductive material or in the case of a Faraday cage, by a mesh of such materials.A Faraday cage operates because an external electrical field causes the electric charges within the cage’s conducting material to be distributed such that they cancel the field’s effect in the cage’s interior. So a faraday cage is like a hollow conductor that keeps things inside ‘safe’. Or in this case, the phone.
