Like Bihar, Punjab to celebrate 550th birthday of Guru Nanak on grand scale
Chandigarh – Like Bihar government, the Punjab government will too accord grand scale celebrations to 550th birth anniversary of first Sikh master Guru Nanak Dev in 2019. Although the celebrations will be across the State, but main celebrations will be at Sultanpur Lodhi, where Guru Nanak spent more than 14 years. Sources in the government said that Prime Minister, several Union Ministers as well as senior Congress leaders will be invited to attend the functions on different days. Punjab Art Council will also start a scholarship in the name of Guru Nanak, said Punjab Art Council chairman Surjit Patar on Wednesday. The Art Council is initiating its programmes from villages. According to its chairman, arts festivals will be organised in rural and remote areas. To promote culture, a period of art literature and theatre has been proposed in the schools for all streams. An Internet website magazine will be introduced soon for the children of the state. Short film competitions are also part of the move to promote culture. Like Schools games, cultural competitions will be also be started from block level towards district and state level, short films competitions will be organised. Patar said that competitions will be based on the books of Bulle Shah and others. To celebrate Asian Cultural Festival in the memory of Guru Nanak Dev is also under consideration. Patar also said that Guru Nanak Dev scholarship will be started for Mahakav, painting and other literature related to the Sikh masters. Furthermore, Sultanpur Lodhi, where the main function will be organised, is being renovated in the wake of anniversary celebrations. He added that there were more than 1,500 artistes, play artistes, poets and painters with the Council and all of them will be sent to rural areas to restore and propagate cultural atmosphere.
