Golden Temple lookalike row: Hunger strike enters second day. The indefinite fast by United Akali Dal’s (UAD) general secretary Parshotam Singh Phaguwala outside Gurdwara Patshahi Nauvin Sahib at Bhawanigarh on Sunday entered its second day. Phaguwala has been observing indefinite fast to get Akal Takht Sahib’s June 20, 2009 Hukamnama (edict) implemented. The edict was issued by Akal Takht Sahib to make changes in the controversial structure of a Golden Temple look-alike Sikh shrine, situated in the premises of Gurdwara Sachkhand Angitha Sahib at Mastuana Sahib, near here. In the edict, Akal Takht had ordered Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to get the ‘sarovar of controversial shrine filled and the bridge, leading to the shrine building, be demolished. It had also directed the SGPC to demolish the Har Ki Pauri and construct a varandah around the controversial shrine. Besides, the SGPC was also ordered to demolish all domes, construct atop shrine. Secretary General of the United Akali Dal Gurdip Singh Bathinda also visited Bhawanigarh on Sunday, met Parshotam Singh Phaguwala, and extended support of his party to him. Talking to Daily Post on Sunday Parshotam Singh Phaguwala said that despite the edict by Akal Takht more than eight and-a-half years ago, the SGPC had remained failed in implementing it in letter and spirit so far. He said only a varandah had been constructed around the controversial shrine, otherwise no other change had been made in the light of the edict. He said neither Sarovar had been filled nor the bridge, leading to the shrine building had been demolished. Besides, a single dome, atop the shrine, in place of five domes, had also not been constructed so far. Phaguwala said he had been agitating for the past eight years to get the edict of Akal Takht implemented in letter and spirit, but to no avail so far. He said the SGPC should take the control of this controversial shrine to implement the edict. When contacted, SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal said on Sunday that he would look into the matter. If the changes were not made asper the edict of Akal Takht he would initiate steps to make the changes at the earliest, Longowal added.
