State demands 5,800 crore for more procurement of paddy
The state government has demanded to release more Rs 5,800 crore under cash credit limit to the Central Government as the target to procure paddy may cross 183 metric tonnes as compare to 168 MT in the last year. The centre government has released so far Rs 28, 262 crore for the procurement of paddy on October 5.Talking to the media persons at Punjab Bhawan, Chandigarh, the Food Secretary of Punjab KAP Sinha, told that it will be the highest paddy purchase in the state.In the ongoing Kharif marketing season, the government agencies procured bulk of the paddy crop. So far, a total of 123.98 lakh tonnes of paddy has been purchased by the state out of which 2.26 lakh tonnes has been bought by private millers. Sinha told that this time because of good weather the crop is free from any kind of problems associated with it and the quality is good.He further added that the government was ensuring payment to farmers within 24 hours while within 72 hours, the lifting is being done. He said 7.8 lakh farmers are getting benefit from the purchase of crop at MSP. Food Secretary also told that they have got Rs 28,000 crore sanctioned out of which Rs 16,000 crore has been exhausted. Although the CCC is valid till October 31, but the limit will get extend and all the operation of paddy procurement will be completed till December 15.
