After almost a year-long battle of nerves between the Shiromani Akali Dal and the BJP over the purported attempt of the BJP to gain control over gurdwaras in Maharashtra and Bihar, a truce of sorts has been struck between the two alliance partners.Late Friday evening, BJP president Amit Shah and SAD president Sukhbir Badal were reportedly closeted to iron out the differences. At the meeting that lasted for more than an hour, the BJP president is believed to have assured Sukhbir Badal to redress all his party’s grievances.Last year, SAD patron Parkash Singh Badal had raised strong objection to the step taken by the Maharashtra government which had led to the appointment of a government nominee as president of the managing committee of the Takht Hazur Sahib Gurdwara.
The BJP president is believed to have assured Sukhbir Badal that the Maharashtra government would rescind the amendment and restore the past practice of electing the managing committee president. The strain between the SAD and the BJP had threatened to take both the sides on the verge of a split. The Akali Dal has called a meeting of the core committee here on Sunday to deliberate on the matter. Senior SAD leader Dr DS Cheema said at the meeting that the SAD president would now brief the committee members on the outcome of his meeting with the BJP president. The SAD had a similar problem recently at Gurdwara Patna Sahib where the government intended to appoint its nominees, but the matter reportedly stands resolved.
The SAD is believed to have taken a strong exception to the manner in which the RSS-affiliate, Rashtriya Sikh Sangat, has been trying to meddle in the Sikh affairs. Both, in Bihar and Maharashtra, the Rashtriya Sikh Sangat is believed to have been the cause of “misleading” the BJP in order to gain control over the historic Sikh shrines. The BJP president is learnt to have assured Sukhbir Badal that the Rashtriya Sikh Sangat would not interfere in the affairs of the Sikhs. Both parties have also agreed not to step on each other’s political turfs, and Badal was assured that the Akalis would be consulted on all issues concerning Sikhs.
