Ludhiana: Known as Manchester of India or Industrial Town, Ludhiana didn’t remain a bastion of any single party. In 16 Lok Sabha elections, Congress Member Parliament won nine times while Shiromani Akali Dal MP Won 7 times. From last times, Congress MP is representing Ludhiana in Lok Sabha. From 1952 to till date, no Independent or candidate of any other party won MP elections from Ludhiana.
Congress MP Davinder Singh Garcha remains three times MP from Ludhiana while Gurcharan Singh Galib of Congress won MP elections two times. From Shiromani Akali Dal, Amrik Singh Aliwal won MP elections two times while all other MPs of Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal represented Ludhiana in Lok sabha for single tenure only.
Bahadur Singh of Congress was first MP of Ludhiana as he won elections in 1952. In 1957 to 1962, Ajit Singh Sarhadi of Congress party represented Ludhiana in Lok Sabha. In 1962, Shiromani Akali Dal registered victory first time in MP elections from Ludhiana. SAD candidate Kapur Singh remained MP from 1962 to 1967. From 1967 to 1977, Congress MP Davinder Singh Garcha represented Ludhiana in Lok Sabha for ten years.
In 1977, Jagdev Singh Talwandi of Shiromani Akali Dal becomes MP from Ludhiana but for only three years. In 1980 Polls, Davinder Singh Garcha of Congress again won elections from Ludhiana. In 1984, SAD MP Mewa Singh Singh Gill registered victory and completed his tenure till 1989. For next two years, SAD candidate Rajinder kaur Bulara remained MP from Ludhiana.
In 1991, Akali Dal lost Ludhiana seat to Gurcharan Singh Galib of Congress. However, Akali dal made comeback in 1996 with SAD candidate Amrik Singh Aliwal won elections. In 1998 again, Aliwal won MP elections but remained MP till 1999 only. In 1999, Gurcharan Singh Galib of Congress again becomes MP from Ludhiana and completed his tenure till 2004.
From 2004 to 2009, Sharanjit Singh Dhillon of Shiromani Akali Dal remained MP from Ludhiana. From 2009 to 2014 Manish Tewari of Congress and in 2014 Ravneet Singh Bittu of Congress becomes MP from Ludhiana.
