In the infamous youth lynching case of Bhagiwandar village of Bathinda district that brought up the issue of lawlessness in the state, Talwandi Sabo police on Saturday booked thirteen persons, including the female sarpanch of the village and his son.Only after the police officials handed over the general diary details (case report) in the evening, the agitating kin of the deceased Sonu Arora was cremated the body.
It was a hectic day for the police as the family members of Sonu, supported by hundreds of others had declined to cremate the body, the post-mortem on which was conducted on Friday at Civil Hospital Bathinda.
Earlier, they were all waiting for Sonu’s father Vijay Kumar to come on parole from the Central Jail Bathinda, where he was lodged in a drugs related case and once he came out with a time limit of two hours, the bereaved father announced not to cremate his body till the accused were arrested.
He alleged that the police were trying to shield the accused with also mentioning that the prime accused Amarinder Singh Raju, son of the village Sarpanch Charanjit Kaur, was close to AAP MLA Baljinder Kaur. Though the policemen tried a lot, they failed in convincing the agitating family members.
Vijay Kumar claimed that his family had an old rivalry with Raju and it is for what he portrayed his son as a drug peddler and making this a base, he lynched him. It is pertinent to mention that on Thursday, Sonu was found in pool of blood with chopped limbs at village Bhagi Wandar. On the day, the village residents had intercepted the police from taking him to the hospital and replying to police query, a number of persons had come forward to take the blame on them, stating that they all jointly assaulted Sonu as he was supplying drugs to their wards.
After putting efforts, police managed to pacify the irate mob and took the injured youth to Civil Hospital Bathinda from where doctors referred him to Government Medical College and Hospital, Faridkot, where he succumbed to injuries in the late evening.
Though the family members of the deceased had alleged Raju and others, finding the situation quite tense Talwandi Sabo police had opted to register the murder case against unidentified persons. On Saturday, while refusing to cremate the body bereaved family members tried to put it in a tractor trolley to take it to their dharna site. However, heavy deployment of police didn’t let the tractor move ahead. One of the cops even pulled out the key from the vehicle to check its movement.
The agitators then took the body on shoulders but the cops, determined to check them reach the dharna site, manhandled them and during the commotion the body was also mishandled. Meanwhile, two female members of the bereaved family attempted to hang themselves with fan and hook at their house but the timely intervention of police foiled their bid.

Police on Saturday recorded the statement of Sonu’s brother Kuldeep Singh, who alleged that Amarinder Singh Raju and others first came to his house on June 5 to abduct Sonu but as he came to know about the move he fled the spot. Finding the females alone, Raju and others allegedly molested them in the house. The complainant further alleged the matter was reported to police but no action was taken. On June 8, the accused again visited their house when Sonu was there. They assaulted him in the street and then took him along in Raju’s Scorpio. Later, they all brutally assaulted him at village Bhagi Wandar, which led to his death.
