Ferozepur: The sleuths of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raided Ferozepur Cantonment Board office for the second time on Tuesday on the complaint in the sewerage scam and searched the residence of Satish Arora SDE and Assistant Gurmej Singh.
It also took the records of the board in their custody. Last time, about three months back, in March, more than 12 CBI officials had raided the board office situated on the Jhoke Road. The state government had sanctioned and funded a sewerage project at a cost of Rs 13 crore for certain areas of Ferozepur Cantt. Soon after the sanction the board started work but could not complete it even after more than two years.
As the project was in progress an activist of the BJP lodged a complaint with the CBI in which he had mentioned that some officials of the board were allegedly involved in a fraud, causing a loss of crores of rupees to the board as well as the state government. The funds had been allocated but only 30-40 per cent of work had been completed. It had also been alleged that without the completion of sewerage works the department had made roads without issuing the connections to residents.
The activists also said that there were many such areas in the cantonment where no sewerage pipe had been laid down despite being shown in documents. Taking the seriousness of the complaint the officials of the CBI raided the office of board and got the record relating to the development works in their custody. As per information after taking the record in their custody the CBI got some spots dug up in the cantonment and found sewerage pipes missing despite these being shown in the plan.
Besides, it was found out that the material used in the construction work was below specifications. It was after this that they questioned the SDE and JE. Though the officials were tight-lipped and maintained distance from the media. On the other hand Arora said that all charges in the complaint were baseless and it was just routine checking and the CBI had not taken anybody in its custody. He added that the CBI was satisfied with the investigations. The role of the CEO and some members of the board has also come under scanner. There were some rumours that the CBI might have already registered a case and some arrests may take place in the next few days.
