Two days ahead of DGP’s retirement nearly 500 cops ranging from constable to SP rank, from across the state queued up in gallery outside his office in Panchkula, on Tuesday for seeking transfers. Sources said that most of them visited the DGP for transfer as they had been transferred away from their home districts. Though, some of them were reported to be still in good books of the DGP. The gallery was overcrowded as additional staff was deployed in gallery to manage those. It also learnt that the officials facing any inquiry were also call on the DGP to get their matter settled.
The speculations leading to another extension to the present DGP come to an end as the government has confirmed his superannuation and parade ceremony by issuing a letter pertaining to the same.It is learnt that the list of front runners for the DGP post comprises SS Deshwal, K Selvaraj and KK Mishra. Although a list carrying 10 names had been sent to the state government by the Police Department and the same was forwarded to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The UPSC has to shortlist the four names and send back to the government and from these, the government has to appoint new DGP.
Those who are front runners are trying hard to use their contacts to grab this coveted post. It also came to light that the officials having connections with the RSS would be given priority for the top post of the police. To some extent, the selection may depend on the choice of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. Punjab DGP Suresh Arora and BS Sandhu were due to retire on September 30, 2018 but were given a three months extension till December 31. However, the Supreme Court allowed them to continue in office till January 31, 2019. Amid this, the speculations of giving another extension to BS Sandhu also emerged. Sandhu was appointed as DGP on April 27, 2017.”
