A first, Hoshiarpur district in the NRI rich Doaba belt of Punjab was all set to explore and promote the possibility of developing the district as the ‘cycling hub’ of the state with the maiden ‘Hoshiarpur Ride and Run’ cycling event on March 10. Under ‘Mission Tandarust Punjab’, Hoshiarpur district administration and the Cycling Federation of India would be organizing this event, which would witness the participation of around 150 national and international level cyclists.
Apart from cycling, half marathon covering a distance of 21, 10 and 5 kilometers would also be organised. Hoshiarpur Deputy Commissioner Isha Kalia said that this would be Punjab’s first ever certified road event, which was being organised with the sole aim of bringing the district on the ‘Cycling map of the country’.”The Cycling Federation of India (CFI) officials have planned 120 kilometer cycling event, covering the rural areas. Hoshiarpur is a beautiful district with vast forest area, unexplored eco-tourism and adventure sport, which was an asset for this region”, she said.
Isha Kalia also said that the underlined message was to motivate the youth to adopt a healthy life style, stay fit and ride away from drugs. “We are expecting a gathering of around 12,000 people, as many cycling clubs of the region would be participating in the event.The winner of the cycling event would get Rs 5 lakh cash award while the half marathon winner would get Rs 2 lakh prize money. The last day to register for the event was March 5”, she added. Director Race from CFI Jagdeep Singh Kahlon said that international cyclists namely Naman Kapila, Manjit Singh and Arvind Panwar would be participating in the event.
