ਮਨਿ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਨ ਆਈਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਨ ਲਗੋ ਭਾਉ ॥ ਸਬਦੈ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਮਨਹਠਿ ਕਿਆ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਇਆ ਸੋ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਹੈ ਜਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਮਃ ੩ ॥ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਮੂੜਾ ਅਵਰਾ ਆਖਿ ਦੁਖਾਏ ॥ ਮੁੰਢੈ ਦੀ ਖਸਲਤਿ ਨ ਗਈਆ ਅੰਧੇ ਵਿਛੁਿੜ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਏ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭੈ ਭੰਨਿ ਨ ਘੜਿਓ ਰਹੈ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਹਸਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਚੂਕੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਬਲਾ ਨਿਤ ਧੰਧਾ ਕਰਤ ਵਿਹਾਏ ॥ ਚਰਣ ਕਰ ਦੇਖਤ ਸੁਣਿ ਥਕੇ ਦਿਹ ਮੁਕੇ ਨੇੜੈ ਆਏ ॥ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਲਗੋ ਮੀਠਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਏ ॥ ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਮਰੈ ਫੁਨਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਮੋਖੰਤਰੁ ਪਾਏ ॥ ਧੁਰਿ ਕਰਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਪਰਾਣੀ ਵਿਣੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਏ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ਤੂ ਮੂੜੇ ਗਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਸਬਦੇ ਪਾਏ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤਦ ਹੀ ਪਾਏ ਜਾਂ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥੨॥ ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਜਿਸ ਦੈ ਚਿਤਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਿਉ ਅੰਦੇਸਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਗਲੈ ਦਾ ਲੋੜੀਐ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸਭਨਾ ਗਲਾ ਕਾ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਧਿਆਇਦਿਆ ਕਿਵ ਨਿਮਖ ਘੜੀ ਮੁਹੁ ਮੋੜੀਐ ॥ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਸਰਬ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਹੋਏ ਨਿਤ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਾਇ ਬਹੀਐ ਮੁਹੁ ਜੋੜੀਐ ॥ ਸਭਿ ਦੁਖ ਭੁਖ ਰੋਗ ਗਏ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਕ ਕੇ ਸਭਿ ਜਨ ਕੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋੜੀਐ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਹੋਆ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਡਿਠੈ ਜਗਤੁ ਤਰਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਲੋੜੀਐ ॥੪॥

ਜੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਹੋਂਦ) ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਨਾ ਆਈ, ਤੇ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾ ਲੱਗਾ, ਜੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਨਾ ਲੱਭਾ, ਤਾਂ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਹਠ ਨਾਲ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਕੀਹ ਲਾਭ? ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ! (ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ) ਜੰਮਿਆ ਉਹ ਜੀਵ ਮੁਬਾਰਿਕ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਸੱਚ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਦੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਖ ਕੇ ਦੁਖਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਆਤਮਿਕਤਾ ਤੋਂ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਦੀ ਮੁੱਢ ਦੀ (ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਖਾਉਣ ਦੀ) ਵਾਦੀ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਤੇ (ਹਰੀ ਤੋਂ) ਵਿਛੁੱੜ ਕੇ ਦੁਖ ਸਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਮਨ (ਦੇ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ) ਨੂੰ ਭੰਨ ਕੇ (ਨਵੇਂ ਸਿਰੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ) ਨਹੀਂ ਘੜਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ) ਗੋਦੀ ਵਿਚ ਸਮਾਇਆ ਰਹੇ। ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਭੀ ਉਸਦੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈਣ ਤੋਂ) ਬਿਨਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮੂਰਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਮ, ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਤੇ ਲੋਭ ਜ਼ੋਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਧੰਧੇ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਉਮਰ ਗੁਜ਼ਰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਪੈਰ, ਹੱਥ, (ਅੱਖੀਆਂ) ਵੇਖ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਤੇ (ਕੰਨ) ਸੁਣ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਥੱਕ ਗਏ ਹਨ, (ਉਮਰ ਦੇ) ਦਿਨ ਮੁੱਕ ਗਏ ਹਨ (ਮਰਨ ਵੇਲਾ ਨੇੜੇ ਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)। ਜਿਸ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਨੌ ਨਿਧੀਆਂ ਲੱਭ ਪੈਣ ਉਹ ਸੱਚਾ ਨਾਮ (ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ) ਪਿਆਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ। ਜੇ ਜਿਉਂਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ (ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਲੋਂ) ਮੁਰਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਮਰ ਕੇ ਫੇਰ (ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ) ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਦਾ ਭੇਤ ਲੱਭਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਧੁਰੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਨਸੀਬ ਨਾਹ ਹੋਈ, ਉਹ (ਪਿਛਲੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ) ਕੰਮਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਹੁਣ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਵਾਲੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ) ਕਿਥੋਂ ਲਭੇ? ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ (ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਸਾਂਭ, (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਤੇ ਭਲੀ ਮਤ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ। ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ! ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਭੀ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਕਰੇ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਗੱਲ ਦੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹਰ ਕਿਸਮ ਦਾ ਸੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ* *ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਇਕ ਖਿਨ ਭਰ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਟਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ। ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਸਦਾ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਬੈਠਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ) ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ। ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਭਗਤ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਭੁੱਖਾਂ ਤੇ ਰੋਗ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਟੁੱਟ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਭਗਤ ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਸਾਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਤਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥

O mind, you have no faith, and you have not embraced love for the Celestial Lord; you do not enjoy the sublime taste of the Word of the Shabad – what Praises of the Lord will you stubborn-mindedly sing? Nanak Ji, his coming alone is approved, who, as Gurmukh, merges into the True Lord. ||1|| Third Mehl: The fool does not understand his own self; he annoys others with his speech. His underlying nature does not leave him; separated from the Lord, he suffers cruel blows. Through the fear of the True Guru, he has not changed and reformed himself, so that he might merge in the lap of God. Night and day, his doubts never stop; without the Word of the Shabad, he suffers in pain. Sexual desire, anger and greed are so powerful within him; he passes his life constantly entangled in worldly affairs. His feet, hands, eyes and ears are exhausted; his days are numbered, and his death is immanent. The True Name does not seem sweet to him – the Name by which the nine treasures are obtained. But if he remains dead while yet alive, then by so dying, he truly lives; thus, he attains liberation. But if he is not blessed with such pre-ordained karma, then without this karma, what can he obtain? Meditate in remembrance on the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, you fool; through the Shabad, you shall obtain salvation and wisdom. Nanak Ji, he alone finds the True Guru, who eliminates self-conceit from within. ||2|| Pauree: One whose consciousness is filled with my Lord Master – why should he feel anxious about anything? The Lord is the Giver of Peace, the Lord of all things; why would we turn our faces away from His meditation, even for a moment, or an instant? One who meditates on the Lord obtains all pleasures and comforts; let us go each and every day, to sit in the Saints’ Society. All the pain, hunger, and disease of the Lord’s servant are eradicated; the bonds of the humble beings are torn away. By the Lord’s Grace, one becomes the Lord’s devotee; beholding the face of the Lord’s humble devotee, the whole world is saved and carried across. ||4||
