Ludhiana: While investigating a child trafficking case, the Shimlapuri police have recovered a child which was allegedly sold by the accused to a Chandigarh couple for Rs 2.60 lakh. The three-month-old child was handed over to the mother of child.
Confirming the development, SHO at Police Station Shimlapuri Sub Inspector Sanjeev Kapoor said that the three accused arrested on June 13 have revealed that they have sold child to Chandigarh-based couple for Rs 2.60 lakh. Following the information the raid was conducted in the house at Sector 46 in Chandigarh and child was recovered.
However the couple who have purchased child managed to flee from the scene. SHO further said that Ajit Singh of Shimlapuri and two midwives Sharanjit Kaur of Shaheed Bhagat Nagar, Dhadran road and Shakuntala Rani of Basant Nagar in Daba area were arrested by police. The three persons were running a well organised gang and also facing cases at different police stations.
Talking about the modus operandi, SHO Sanjeev Kapoor said that the midwives approached the pregnant women and lured them with money and in return get their child after delivery. Later, they sell the child to needy couples, added Kapoor. In this case, the accused has purchased child from a woman resident of Dhandran Road. The woman was a labourer and required money. The couple who has purchased the newborn was also nominated in the case and efforts were on to arrest them, said SHO.
