Ludhiana: Around 700 Unaided Colleges of Punjab are at verge of closure courtesy due to Punjab Government’s futile promises to release Post Matric Scholarship of SC/BC students in time. It is worth mentioning that Private Unaided Colleges of Punjab cater to 95% students of Punjab but most are facing risk of closure in want of funds.
The Joint action Committee comprising PUTIA (Punjab Unaided Technical Institutions Association), PUCA (Punjab Unaided Colleges Association), B.Ed Federation, ITI Association, ETT Federation, Degree College Association, Nursing College Association, Polytechnic Association and Education Forum met on Friday and decided to take firm action for saving the carrier of SC/ BC students.
Unaided Colleges were asked not to charge any fees from SC/BC students by Punjab Government and it was duly implemented by all unaided colleges of Punjab moreover the examination fees of these students too were deposited from college funds but till date despite repeated representation to CM/ Deputy CM/ Secretaries / Directors, Punjab Government is yet to release Rs.80 crores for 2,86,000 students of 2014-15 and about Rs.400 crores of 3 lakh students of 2015- 16 .
It is to be mentioned that due to non-payment of scholarship amount for SC/ST students colleges are not able to the salaries timely. Many colleges have been declared non performing asset (NPA) by the banks state government and many more would be declared NPA if government would further delay in the release of scholarship funds.
Punjab bandh to be announced on meeting of joint Action Committee in Chandigarh on October 3.
