Ludhiana: Baldev Singh, a residence of Taran Tarn district (58) is the only one from the Punjab who has won a silver medal in the 3-day All India Postal Athletics and Cycle Tournament being played here from September 21-23.
On its second consecutive day of the tournament played here on Thursday, the players across the country put their efforts to win medal for their state. The event in which he participated and won the silver medal is 20 kilometre simple walk race. The first position was held by the player of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab comes second and third and final position was held by the
Army Postal Service. He has been participating since 2007 in various marathons as well.
It may be mentioned here that a total about 180 athletes are participating in the tournament from across the country.
On being contact, Baldev Singh told that he had joined as a clerk in 1981. Later on, he was promoted as Sub Poster Master in Tarn Taran district. “My passion for athletics was from very beginning and since 2011 I am the only one from Punjab who is winning medals in these athletics meets”, he revealed.
Further, he said, “I have won three gold medal and silver as well from past five years. Mainly the players from Punjab are very less in number and I can’t see any of the players winning medals from past seven to eight years in any athletic meet for Punjab.”
He further revealed that he has been continuously winning gold for the past nine years in 5,000 and 10,000 meters race in his age category in open veteran athletic championship of state.
