Kapurthala: The Kapurthala is often referred to as ‘Paris of Punjab’ due to its architecture. Kapurthala has four assembly constituencies of Kapurthala, Sultanpur Lodhi, Phagwara and Bholath .
In all the constituencies Congress, BSP and BJP have not announced their candidates while SAD and AAP have declared the names of two candidates out of four assembly seats.
Kapurthala segment is the bastion of Congress which has won 9 elections out of 14 elections held on this seat, also the party candidate has remained undefeated since 2002 . Rana Gurjit Singh or his family members retained this seat during last four elections. Rana Gurjit Singh won this seat in 2002 and 2012 while her sister in-law won by polls in 2004 and her wife Rana Rajbans Kaur won this seat in 2007.
This time SAD has played Dalit card by giving ticket to Paramjit Singh Pamma which poses challenge to expected Congress candidate Rana Gurjit Singh. AAP, BSP has still not declared their candidate for Kapurthala segment. However the win in this segment is going to be narrowed.
In Phagwara there is always a close contests between BJP and Congress.
Due to factionalism in BJP at Phagwara between MLA Som and MP Vihay Sampla, Congress gets a upper hand.
At Sultanpur segment SAD and APP have declared their candidates. Dr Uppinderjit Kaur and Arjuna Awardee Sajjan Singh Cheema respectively. SAD candidate during last elections could not create hatrick and lost to Navtej Singh Cheema of Congress in 2012 polls.
Dr Kaur’s ill health may provide benefit to both AAP and expected Congress candidate Navtej Singh Cheema in triangular contest.
In Bholath only AAP has declared its candidate and has given ticket to former Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira.
Though SAD’s Bibi Jagir Kaur won three assembly elections out of last four but this time due to her criminal conviction, voters may change their mind. On the other hand Congress is trying hard to find a strong candidate in the segment.
