Ludhiana: To earn quick bucks and after getting lessons in kidnapping from Bollywood movies and TV serials, a man not only scripted his cousin’s kidnapping for ransom but also executed the same with the help of his two accomplices. The family of kidnapped youth paid Rs 30 lakh to the kidnappers to secure the former’s release. Later, the police arrested the trio and recovered the ransom amount from them. The accused had demanded Rs 1.5 crore as ransom and were paid Rs 30 lakh. The police have also recovered a Scorpio car from the accused.
IG Jalandhar range Lok Nath Angra said before executing their plan, the accused studied several kidnapping cases, watched Bollywood movies and TV serials. The accused noted that the action of the police in kidnappers and loose points of kidnappers which land them in police net. However, the police got information regarding the kidnapping on April 28 but not aware of the ransom call received from kidnappers by the family. After the NRI brother of victim struck a deal and got his brother rescued the police started an investigation and arrested three kidnappers. IG Angra said that Ranjit Singh, a resident of Dhaipai village, had been kidnapped by some unknown persons on April 28 evening and a case was registered at Jodhan police station.
After the victim was released on the next day of kidnapping, police came to know that Ranjit’s family had paid Rs 30 lakh for his release. The police started investigating the matter further and arrested the kidnappers who have been identified as Gurjant Singh resident of village Pandori, Mandeep Singh son of Gurmel Singh, a resident of village Pandori and Dr Mandeep Singh son of Dilbagh Singh, a resident of village Chhapa under Thulliwal police station in district Barnala. Accompanied by DIG SK Kalia, SSP Ludhiana Rural Upinderjit Singh, the IG said that Mandeep Singh is cousin brother (real maasi’s son) of victim Ranjit Singh, and he had planned the kidnapping of Ranjit Singh in connivance with his friends.
The accused also injected chloroform and sedatives to the victim and kept him in a room at Tahli Sahib village. Mandeep knew very well that NRI Hardeep Singh would pay any amount for the sake of getting his brother Ranjit Singh free from the clutches of kidnappers. That is why they initially demanded a ransom of Rs 1.5 crore from NRI Hardeep Singh, and later released Ranjit Singh by receiving a ransom amount of Rs 30 lakh. Mandeep said that he had to repay a loan of Rs 40 lakh of bank, arhtiya and other persons and that is why he hatched this conspiracy of kidnapping Ranjit Singh. This was the first crime which the trio committed.
How the Kidnappers landed in police net
Following the information provided by the victim that Scorpio car was used in crime, a massive operation was conducted by the Ludhiana rural police with the help of other police districts, said IG Lok Nath Angra. To trace the Scorpio car of the kidnappers the Transport office’s records were scanned. The cops checked all the parking lots in the district, movements of vehicles at toll plazas. With the hard efforts of the cops the case was cracked and kidnappers landed in the police net.
Promotions for cops
As it was a high profile case, Punjab DGP Suresh Arora was monitoring the case personally. After the case was cracked, DGP awarded Class-1 certificates to Inspector Waryam Singh, SHO Sudhar, Inspector Kulwant Singh, SHO Dakha, Inspector Lovedeep Singh, in-charge CIA Staff, SI Sukhwinder Singh, SHO Jodhan, SI Bikramjit Singh, SHO Sadar Police Station Raikot and SI Ramaninderjit Singh, in-charge Special Cell with Certificate First Class . Besides, one rank promotion has been announced for Head Constable Harpreet Singh, Constable Navjot Singh and Gurpreet Singh. A cash reward of Rs 50,000 was also given to Constable Harpreet Singh for tracing the place of kidnappers.
