Amritsar: There is a reason for those residents of Amritsar to rejoice who either themselves have to go to Toronto or have their kith and kin based there, who have to come to Amritsar to visit them. Conceding the long-standing demand of the residents of the area, the department of civil aviation of government of India has decided to extend the flight going from Amritsar to Birmingham up to Toronto in Canada. This decision of civil aviation department would be made practical very soon.
Stating this here on Thursday, a veteran BJP leader of the area and an MP from Rajya Sabha, Shwet Malik, disclosed that he met the union minister for civil aviation, Ganpati Raju and the minister of state for civil aviation, Jayant Sinha in Delhi a few days back who assured to implement this decision in letter and spirit very soon. He stated that earlier, he had held a meeting with the union minister on July 3rd last when he had pleaded to the union minister to re-start the discontinued flights from Amritsar to other destinations abroad.
He had then pleaded that Guru Ram Dass International Airport of Amritsar, that has come up with a sum of rupees five hundred crore, is of little use to the residents of Punjab as the Punjabis has to go to Delhi or other stations of the country in order to take international flights to Toronto in Canada, even today.
He also appealed to the union civil aviation minister that it was a cherished dream of former prime minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, during whose tenure this international airport came up, that the residents of Punjab may not have to go to Delhi to take international flights to various countries, rather, the international airport of Amritsar should serve this purpose.
However, the flights that used to go up to Toronto in Canada via Birmingham were discontinued from here a long time back.
Malik revealed that thousands of people hailing from Majha and Doaba regions of Punjab are based in Toronto as well as to other cities of Canada and all they are to visit Amritsar or other stations of Punjab.
However, if they fail to get direct flight to Amritsar from Toronto, their journey becomes cumbersome and more time consuming too. “The direct air connection between Toronto and Amritsar enables them to reach at Amritsar and vice versa easily and in short time”, added Malik, who further stated that this step of the civil aviation department would ease out the air traffic from Delhi and other stations too, as when the flights from Amritsar to Toronto will start, the number of flights going from these stations to Toronto will also reduce considerably.
Malik also said that during the regime of UPA at the centre in 2012, its alliance partner congress had discontinued the direct flights from Amritsar to Toronto with a view to ensure benefit to a private air service operator.
However, with this decision, the people who had connections in Toronto would be benefited to a great extent.
