Ludhiana: A large number of athletes who had arrived at Guru Nanak Stadium here on Saturday for their participation in the ongoing trials for the district-level team of athletics were seen facing problem of finding drinking water for them. There was not even any arrangement for their refreshment. As a result, many players were seen less energetic. These players were even failing to give their best in the ground.
The players had arrived from across the district. It may be mentioned here that the sports persons are often blamed to fail to get medals in games at different levels. But, the major reason remains is the lack of infrastructural and other basic facilities that the players are not facilitated with.
One of the participants Arjun Sharma, on being contact, told that he had come from Doraha after covering a distance of about 22-Kms and when he reached ground for the first time, all the toilets were closed and no arrangement of refreshment was there. The major problem was lack of drinking water and they managed drinking water from pipeline which was used for watering the ground. The water from that pipeline was made available to let the participants at least to quench their thirst as the trails were tiring enough.
There was no dustbin near ground as a result of this, players were throwing the waste on the ground and on other hand, some players complained about the condition of track as well. Parents who came with their children were raising questions upon the authorities of improper management for the trials. They said that water is the basic need for the players and in hot and humid weather, it should have made available as there is a chance of dehydration among participants and they could have even faint.
Satbir Singh Atwal, President, District Athletics Association said that there was no problem regarding the drinking water as two water tanks were made available outside the ground for proper supply of water. It was big achievement for athletics association that this was for the first time when players came in large numbers from different parts of city and that is how some participants would not have got the water.
Kartar Singh, District Sports Officer (DSO), Ludhiana told that Athletics Association should have initiated needed action to resolve the problem being faced by the participants at trials. He also claimed that it indeed was a challenge to manage huge crowd of participants at the trials.
The two-day trails are to conclude on Sunday.
