Amritsar: Prof Kirpal Singh Badungar was on Saturday elected as the President of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). His name was proposed by Punjab Cabinet minister and senior SGPC member Tota Singh and was seconded by former SGPC chief Bibi Jagir Kaur during the general house meeting of the SGPC in the Teja Singh Samundri hall, here.
It is pertinent to mention that on the eve of the day, the Shiromani Akali Dal’s elected members (who are in clear majority) on Friday authorised the party president and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal to take a call on the new SGPC president and other office-bearers. The name of the chief was sealed in an envelope, which was opened on Saturday and formally made public by Tota Singh, as learnt.
Initially, there was some opposition to his name by a few members who had proposed the name of Surjit Singh Kalabula but the matter was resolved as Kalabula withdrew his candidature in the meeting. Later, he was included in 11-member committee.
Among others, Dirba MLA Sant Balbir Singh Ghunas, former minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan and former SGPC chief Kirpal Singh Badungar, and the outgoing president Avtar Singh Makkar were also keen for the position but they opted to go by the party decision without expressing any resentment.
The house also elected Baldev Singh Kiampuri from Haryana as senior Vice President, Baba Buta Singh as Junior Vice President and Amarjit Singh Chawla as General Secretary. Those taken in 11-member executive committee are Gurmel Singh Sangatpura, Ram Singh, Jaipal Singh Mandian, Nirmal Singh Hareao, Kulwant Singh Manan, Balwinder Singh Veinpuin, Bibi Joginder Kaur Bathinda, Surjit Singh Bhittewadh, Surjit Singh Kalabula, Gurcharan Singh Grewal and Satpal Singh
