Ludhiana: Lok Sabha today witnessed a lot of commotion when Member of Parliament Ravneet Singh Bittu accused the ruling Akali-BJP Government of Punjab of diverting the Post Matric Scholarship funds meant for the students of SC community. More than three lakh students have been badly affected in the state as a result, he said.
Ravneet said, the Dalits throughout the country are being subjected to atrocities for one reason or the other. Punjab has highest concentration of Dalit population at 32 per cent, which is being deprived of educational benefits as part of a sinister conspiracy by the ruling parties, he said.
Stressing his point, Bittu said, as a result of the diversion of funds, the state government is unable to furnish correct utilisation certificates till date. He accused the Centre of using this as an alibi to stop the further release of funds. Showing documentary proof, Bittu said funds to the tune of Rs.526 crore for the year 2015-16 are yet to be released by the Centre.
Similarly, the funds for year 2014-15 to the tune of Rs.245 crore are also pending for release. Schools and colleges are pressurising the students to pay the fees which many of them cannot afford. What is the fault of the students who are being deprived of the scholarship and whose poor parents are unable to pay the fees, he asked.
Bittu said the SAD and the BJP are partners in the NDA Government in the Centre and at the state. They should resolve this issue concerning the lives of lakhs of children at the earliest so that this generation of the deprived classes can receive the education necessary to lead a better life.
