Ludhiana: Owing to the losses suffered by sweater and jacket manufacturers during past three years, many players were now shifting in manufacturing of jeans, trousers and shirts in Ludhiana. Besides, many of the jeans washing units have been established in the city after seeing the huge production of jeans over here. On being contact, city industrialists told that from past few years the business had started going in downward graph. “As Ludhiana is known for its hosiery products all over the world but now trend has changed in a drastic manner”, they said, adding “Many industrialists have shifted their business into manufacturing of jeans and cotton trousers.
” Mohan Kumar, who owns a washing unit, said, “I use to wash the jeans at small level but from past few months I am not able to complete the orders of the people in time. As large number of manufacturing units were established in Ludhiana in this year”. However, the industry was now witnessing a change in trend in manufacturing of goods. While some businessmen have already shifted in manufacturing of trousers and shirts, many others were also planning the same. Huge stock of hosiery goods were also lying in godowns of the manufacturers even this year.
Jagjot Singh, a local industrialist, said that there were times when the Ludhiana industry used to manufacture only hosiery products like sweater, jackets among others. “But now time was changing and people want to expand their business by manufacturing other garments as well”, added Singh. He further claimed that earlier Tank road in Delhi was popular in World for manufacturing and selling jeans but now Ludhiana is slowly picking its graph up in jeans line. He said that many players in Ludhiana were now manufacturing T-shirts, jeans and trousers – garments that were earlier manufactured in Delhi, Bangalore and some other cities of the country.
Taranbir Singh Jolly, owner of J&J Exports unit at Salem Tabri who started manufacturing of trousers and shirts a year ago, said that there were much better returns in these garments than sweater, jacket and other hosiery products. “Those people involved in manufacturing of hosiery products have blocked their money in market. While wholesalers buy garments from manufacturers, the former are not able to pay the money to latter as there is a slump in market and sale of goods is slow”, said Singh adding that he has started sending his manufactured goods even to other states.
