Ludhiana: A day after the four youth were drowned in Satluj River while immersing the idols of Lord Ganesha on Sunday, the family members of the aggrieves families and residents of Islam Ganj staged protest at Jagraon Bridge and blocked road as well as rail traffic.
As a result of the 7-hour-long protest, the common life was thrown out of gear and the city came to a standstill. The situation turned ugly when protesters pelted stones on the train after the harassed passengers objected on blocking the rail traffic.
During the protest, the ambulances were also struck in the vehicular jam.
To bring the situation under control, the police have to use of mild cane charge on the protestors. Around 5 persons including two police personnel suffered injuries in stone pelting and cane charge.
Later, the protest was lifted in the evening after the administration agreed to give Rs.2 lakh compensation to the family of each deceased and a job. Due to the protest, several trains from New Delhi to Amritsar and vice verca were running late. The road traffic was badly hit on almost all city roads.
The protesters were demanding compensation of Rs.10 lakhs for the family of each victim and case against divers who demanded money for handing over bodies.
They alleged that the divers had refused to save the deceased youths from drowning. The divers had demanded Rs.15,000 for offering help. Later, the divers wanted money for handing over the body, alleged the family members of deceased.
After occurrence of the incident on Sunday evening, the protesters had blocked CMC Chowk and later on, Jagraon Bridge till midnight. On Monday morning also, the protesters carried out protest march till Jagraon Bridge and blocked road. Later, they also blocked rail traffic.
Congress MLA Surinder Dawar, social worker Chanderkant Chadha also reached the spot to pacify the protestors.
