Patiala: Former Deputy Speaker Bir Devinder Singh on Monday termed collective resignations of Congress legislators on SYL canal issue as an embarrassment.
He said that legislators should attend special session of Punjab Vidhan Sabha to discuss important subject and its outcomes. No political party should attempt to take political advantage out of emerging scenario he said.
Singh further added that former PM Indira Gandhi intentionally entrapped Akali Leadership on the issue of river water sharing at the time of reorganisation of Punjab in 1966. Unfortunately Punjab has excessively exploited its ground water ever since.
Singh quipped that Punjab has no surplus water to share with any other state if agriculture has to survive in state than water needs to be protected at any cost.
“In the light of catastrophic situation emerging, political parties of Punjab should not indulge in blame game to draw political mileage. Rather should stand at a common platform to safeguard share of river waters.
He added that Presidential reference to apex court was sent on the behest of UPA Government led by Dr Manmohan Singh and added that he wonders why Capt Amarinder Singh did not take up the issue then with central government and resigned from the post of Chief Minister.
Singh further said that he would expect Capt Amarinder Singh to bring out all the historical facts to expose the nexus that worked against vital interests of Punjab since 1947 rather than showing indecent haste to occupy ‘chair’ of Chief Minister.
