Jalandhar: A local court on Saturday acquitted Congress leader and ex- Jalandhar Mayor Surinder Mahey in an old case of cheque bounce but awarded two year imprisonment to his two sons.
The court acquitted Mahey and his wife in the cheque bounce, relieving him from the case. But, the development led to political storm for Mahey, who was a ticket seeker from the urban reserve seat of Jalandhar West.
On Saturday, the court awarded two year imprisonment to Gaurav Mahey and Sahil Mahey. The check bounce case was filed by one Abhay Gharu in the court of JMIC Jalandhar. Surinder Mahey runs leather business in the city and he has given a cheque to Abhay, which bounced when he deposited in the bank.
However, later in the evening, Surinder Mahey issued a statement stating that no court convicted or sentenced him under any offence or law. “Abhay Gharu was convicted by the court of Hem Amrit Mahi, JMIC Jalandhar in two cases against which he filed appeals which were pending before the court of Additional Sessions Judge Gurmohan Singh”, he mentioned in the statement.
Mahey also stated that his firm M/s Gaurav Hide Company and M/s Indian Skin Company have to recover amounts from M/s Akansha Tanneries and M/s Om Sons being run by Abhay Gharu and his brother Rahul Gharu amounting to total Rs 90, 36, 063.
The ex- congress mayor said that Abhay Gharu in connivance with Deepak Chawla of M/s Chawla Tanneries forged and fabricated two blank cheques lying with him as security, misused them and got a false complaint against his sons.
He said that Gaurav and Sahil were convicted illegally by the court for which appeal was being filed before the Sessions Court in order to challenge the said wrong and illegal judgement passed by the court. “Had the version of Abhay Gharu been true, he would not have convicted and sentenced by the court vide judgement dated May 30, 2016.
Besides that eight more complaints were pending against Abhay and Rahul under section 138 of NI Act filed by my sons”, Mahey added.
