Ludhiana: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has demanded the immediate arrest of the officials responsible for the death of two sewer men who died on September 16 due to asphyxia while cleaning a choked sewage line at Nirankari Street, near GT Road.
Ramesh Rattan- city secretary of the CPI and Gurnam Sidhu along with leaders of the Safai Labour Union Vijay Kumar and Sham Lal visited the families of the deceased sewer men.
The CPI leaders said, “It is a shear negligence and apathy towards human life that the sewer men were asked to go into the gutters without any safety kits. This is a blatant violation of the decisions of the Supreme Court of India.”
They demanded immediate release of a compensation of Rs. 10 Lakh each to the families of deceased sewer men and a permanent job to a family member as per the directive of the Supreme Court of India.
Dr Arun Mitra, assistant secretary district unit of the party, said, “It is a shame that lakhs of rupees have been spent to purchase the machines for cleaning of the roads but not for the sewer pipes. This has been a cause of deaths of a number of young lives every year. This must be stopped.” He said instead of manual cleaning a mechanized system of cleaning of the sewer pipes should be ensured.
