Ludhiana: The nationwide Bandh call given by opposition parties over the issue of demonetisation of currency notes evoked no response in city on Sunday. As the Congress announced only protests, the city markets remained opened as usual.
However, due to the non availability of new currency, no customers were seen at the shops. The people only buy food and other items of daily needs.
The Congress leaders along with their supporters protested over the demonetisation decision of Union government and burnt the effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The main markets Model Town, Sarabha Nagar, Gill Road, Chaura Bazaar and others remained opened but the low footfall was seen. District Congress president Gurpreet Bassi Gogi said that after the decision of demonetisation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the entire country is almost closed. Till now, 60 persons have lost their lives but the Prime Minister has not uttered even a single word. Meanwhile, the protests were held in Khanna and Jagraon also over the demonetisation. In Khanna, the party workers led by MLA Gurkirat Singh Kotli staged protests and slammed the union government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Kotli said that the common people are left without cash and away from food but the government is still unmoved. The prime minister is taking credit over the decision but in ground reality the common man is real sufferer.
Raising their voice against the demonetisation decision taken by the prime minister, Congress party of constituency Jagraon protested against government. The Congress workers demanded the prime minister to take back the decision.
