Chandigarh: The Model jail of Burail which has more than 700 inmates, has only a doctor and a pharmacist who are are dealing with the health issues of the prisoners.
According to the sources,the doctor and have to be on duty at night as well. Sources said that since there are more than 700 inmates, 7-8 calls relating to health problem are reported every day following which minimum four doctors are required permanently.
Meanwhile, the jail authorities have sent a communiqué to the administration for more doctors. A green signal has been given to the Model jail for keeping new staff. With the positioning of new doctors, round the clock duties will be set at Model jail.
Sources said that for dealing with the health problems of inmates, there is a doctor Neena Chaudhary and pharmacist Rakesh Mehra at present. The dispensary remains open in the day time with the doctor being at dispensary. At night if any inmate requires any medical assistance, then the pharmacist checks him initially while later the doctor is called if required.
If the situation is not managed by the medical team at jail dispensary, then the inmate is referred to Government Hospital in Chandigarh who is taken in an ambulance.
Inspector General Prisons A S Cheema said, “There is a doctor and a pharmacist present permanently at the jail dispensary. If there is a requirement of a specialist doctor ,we have an OPD here on regular intervals at the dispensary to meet the exigency”.
