Khanna: How severe is the menace of stray dog menace can be judged from the fact that the numbers of dog bites cases are on rise in across Punjab. According to the available official data, the numbers of dog bites cases in the year 2011 were 15888 followed by 19630 in 2012, 21096 in 2013, 39826 in 2014 and 52010 in the year 2015. Interestingly, this data has been got collected under the RTI Act by the Khanna-based Lok Sewa Club, an NGO, president P D Bansal.
The information under the RTI Act has been collected from the Department of the Health and Family Welfare Department, Punjab. Reacting to the RTI reply, Bansal regretted that the department had “concealed” the data about the deaths caused due to the dog bites. Further, Bansal said that the department had informed them that there was no death due to dog bites in Punjab from the year 2011-2015. “It creates doubts because there had been appearing news of deaths due to dog bites in Punjab,” he claimed.
