Wanted gangster Gopi Rurka and his accomplices, all of whom were history sheeters arrested from Phagwara on Monday
Jalandhar: In a major breakthrough, the Kapurthala police and the Special Task Force (STF) of the Punjab Police on Monday arrested wanted gangsters, all of them history sheeters along with weapons while they were roaming in Phagwara in Kapurthala.
A team led by SSP Kapurthala Rajinder Singh, AIG (STF) HPS Khakh and Phagwara DSP Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal acted on a tip off that gangster Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi Rurka, who was the kingpin of the gang and his accomplice Sonu Bablo along with others were roaming in Phagwara for committing some criminal activity.
The gangsters were notorious for making gang war videos and making them viral on social media. A case under section 307, 148, 149 of the IPC, Arms Act and NDPS Act while further investigation was on in the case, the police said.
AIG HPS Khakh said that the police laid a special naka in and around Kapurthala to nab them. “To create commotion, the gangsters opened fire at the police party but they were overpowered by our men. Gopi was facing as many as 15 criminal cases filed in different stations namely Fatehgarh Sahib, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Jalandhar to name a few”, he said.
Addressing a press conference in Phagwara, AIG Khakh and SSP Rajinder Singh said that Gopi Rurka, who was the main kingpin of the gang, had a robust physique. “Gopi used to upload the pictures of his robust physique with weapons and also upload them on the social media sites, hence making them viral on – Facebook and Whats App. Even his Facebook page was also flooded with his pictures eulogizing gun culture and criminal activities”, they said.
The senior police officers also shared that Gopi was notorious for intimidating local residents through his gang war videos on social media. “Gopi would make videos of gangwars, street fights, loot incidents and other criminal activities and upload them on the social media. A majority of such notorious videos had gone viral in the past some time”, he added.
SSP Rajinder Singh while showing the recovered weapons said that the accused used to threaten the public for extortion activities. “The gangsters had spread its nexus in Kapurthala, Jalandhar, SBS Nagar, Ludhiana and Hoshiarpur districts to terrorise people for extortion acts. Gopi also had links with dreaded criminals and gangsters lodged in other jails of the region while their contacts with other criminals in Majha and Malwa belts were also being probed”, he said.
Modus Operandi- This gang was active in Doaba region and was involved in threatening people, extortion, looting people on the roads, looting petrol pumps and narcotics supply. “Gopi and his accomplices used to hire vehicles of their close aides and never even used their personal mobiles for engineering criminal activities. To evade any public questioning and police net, the gangsters would stay in abandoned houses and would change their houses quite often”, the officers said.
Recovery: The police recovered one 9 mm pistol and nine rounds and 3 live rounds and two unused rounds, a .32 bore pistol and 3 rounds of fire, 12 bore rifle and eight live cartridges, 38 bore pistol, 315 bore pistol and live cartridges, a ‘desi katta’, two ‘Kirpans’, two ‘Khande’ (Sikhism sign), 1 kg and 300 gram of heroin, a Qualis car bearing number PB08AK3666 and two spades.
The arrested gangsters: The arrested gangsters included Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi Rurka, resident of Rurka Kalan, Jalandhar, Jatinder Singh alias Sonu Balalo, resident of Balalo Kapurthala, Sukhbir Singh alias Sukha Patwari from Ghungrana in Amritsar, Gurwinder Singh alias Ginda from Soond village in SBS Nagar, Myank Chopra alias Sunny Chopra from SBS Nagar and Harwinder Singh alias Binda from Kapurthala.
