Mohali: District Tobacco Control Committee members imposed penalties on the school authorities for violations of the Tobacco Control Act. During the inspection of schools by DTCC this has been seen that around the schools shopkeepers selling tobacco items. DTCC also imposed chalans of defaulter shopkeepers.
Dr HS Oberoi Nodal officer for district tobacco control committee investigated different schools and shopkeepers. Total 11 fines imposed out of which two are private schools.
In Phase 11 mohali, three shopkeepers were being sold tobacco at a radius of only 10 yards of a private school. Oberai said that in Tobacco Control Act (kotapa, 2003) under section 6 B may not be sold tobacco products within 100 yards of any educational institution. It is the responsibility of the school head to ensure stops such violations. “The head of the educational institution is responsible for the violations and could be fined.” he said.
