Ludhiana: With an aim towards women empowerment and their security, the District Administration has taken another leap in this direction as they have launched 11 E-Rickshaws for women. These E-Rickshaws have been provided by Hero Electrical, Avon Cycles, FICI, an NGO named Sahas, and some others.
These eco-friendly E-Rickshaws would be driven by women and only women can ride them. To start with, a total of 11 pink coloured E-Rickshaws have been launched in the first phase. Ludhiana is now the first city of the state which has started E-Rickshaws.
While speaking to media persons after flagging off these E-Rickshaws, Punjab Irrigation Minister Sharanjit Singh Dhillon stated that this initiative has been taken keeping in mind the empowerment of women as well as their safety. He said that with the start of this project, women can now become self dependent and can also set an example for others.
While providing information, Deputy Commissioner Ravi Bhagat and ADC (Development) Apneet Riyait said that several women and girls have shown interest for this innovative project. They said that the drivers of these 11 E-Rickshaws are above 18 years of age and they have been provided driving licenses after training. They said that initially, these E-Rickshaws would ply on only few routes where the footfall of women is more. They said that thousands of women/girls commute to different areas for work or study daily.
The District Administration has decided to employ only women/girl drivers for these 11 E-Rickshaws so that the commuters have a sense of security amongst themselves. All these E-Rickshaws are registered with the office of District Transport Officer.
