Jalandhar: Former DGP (Jails) Shashi Kant on Thursday said that he would oppose the candidature of tainted candidates fielded by all political parties across the board and write to Election Commission of India (ECI) against them.
DGP Shashi Kant said that he would oppose tainted candidates through his two organizations- ‘Nasha Virodhi Manch’ and ‘Haq and Insaf Foundation’. “We would hold protests in the respective constituencies of such candidates, who were found to have been patronizing drugs mafia in the state. Apart from this, we would also write to ECI in this regard”, he said.
Without naming any political party, the former DGP said that some parties have fielded tainted candidates as of now. “We would not only expose such candidates but also hold a campaign against them in the Assembly Elections”, he added.
Talking to the media, after appearing in a lower court in a defamation case, Shashi Kant also spoke on the SYL canal row. The former DGP emphasized that the neighbouring states of Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan should pay royalty to Punjab.
Even before reorganization of Punjab, these states used to pay royalty to Punjab. “If SAD-BJP government has brought a resolution against water sharing, then all the three states should pay royalty to Punjab. Moreover, if Punjab can pay royalty to other states for getting coal, stones and electricity, why can’t these states also accede?” he questioned.
The former DGP also said that he has sought time from Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to speak to him on SYL. “I would also approach Capt Amarinder Singh and AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal to stop playing politics on SYL and stop water to Haryana”, he added.
Shashi Kant also said that only Punjab and Haryana High Court was monitoring drugs smuggling incidents while Punjab and the BJP led centre government was a mute spectator, he emphasized.
