Jalandhar: Jalandhar police arrested a peon on Tuesday who posed as an Excise and Taxation Inspector and tried to extort money from a paint store owner.
The arrested person Surjit Singh of Basti Nau, Jalandhar was a suspended peon from the Excise Taxation Department and was involved in litigation with the department. He used to show old tax summons to businessmen and duped them of their money since many months.
According to police sources, Surjit Singh went to the paint store and asked owner Atul to appear in the department as he had issued a fake bill. Atul told him that the bill was not issued by him but the person threatened to impose heavy fine on him.
Atul called his neighbours who judged immediately that the person was fake. Basti Bawa Khel Police was informed who arrested Surjit Singh from Basti Mithu.
ADCP Amrik Powar told media persons that the arrested person has accepted of having extorted money from other shopkeepers also. DP
