Sangrur: A debt-ridden farmer on Tuesday allegedly committed suicide at a protest rally being staged by farmers since Monday at the grain market in Gharachon village, near Bhawanigarh in the district.
The deceased, identified as 60-year-old Darshan Singh of Saron village near Sangrur reportedly consumed some poisonous substance in a tractor-trailer. He was taken to Civil Hospital Sangrur where the doctors declared him brought dead. The farmer unions have demanded a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for his family, a government job for a family member, and writing off of the entire loan.
The farmers have been staging dharna since Monday as they were not allowed by the police to move towards Chandigarh for taking part in ‘pucca morcha’ (indefinite protest).
