Fatehgarh Sahib: Though district Fatehgarh Sahib came into existence on April 13, 1992 when late Beant Singh was Punjab Chief Minister but all three constituencies of district i.e. Amloh, Bassi Pathana(reserve) and Fatehgarh Sahib itself are still devoid of basic amenities. The successive governments did nothing concrete for the overall development of the district.
Fatehgarh Sahib was carved out of district Patiala and the main towns of district are Sirhind, Bassi Pathana, Amloh, Khamano and Mandi Gobindgarh. Industrial town Mandi Gobindgarh falls under Amloh constituency. Mandi Gobindgarh industry which once generated crores in revenue for the state and union government is in doldrums due to wrong policies of respective governments.
In Bassi Pathana reserve constituency Sanghol, which has historical importance as Toramana and Mihirakula coins, a Buddhist stupa, and Kushan sculptures of Mathura school of the first and second centuries. Nothing condusive has been done till date to develop this historical segment.
The district headquarters has no sewerage, clean drinking water, fully equipped hospitals, bus stand, and proper fire station. Work on Sewerage started in town only a couple of months back in Sirhind-Fatehgarh Sahib and the project is far away from competition.
Illegal residential colonies dot entire district. Though the district has become an education hub but still lacks basic infrastructure and the only government college in JLN at Turan near Mandi Gobindgarh is in dilapidated condition.
Heath care facilities are not up to mark and for treatment of serious ailments people still have to rush to Patiala, Ludhiana or Chandigarh. Lack of advanced equipment in hospitals has increased the number of accident-related deaths.
The historical building of Aam-Khas Baag, Sirhind constructed by Mughals is poor condition. Fire tenders have to be called from Patiala, Khanna, Mandi Gobindgarh and Rajpura towns in case of major fire incidents.
Lack of maintenance of roads and traffic lights has also increased number of accidents. Residents of Fathegarh district face many problem such as over polluted Mandi Gobindgarh.
The tercentenary of martyrdom of younger Sahibjadas (sons) of Guru Gobind Singh, which was observed at Fatehgarh Sahib, in December, 2004 had brought a ray of hope for residents. However, neither State governments or SGPC did nothing concrete on the ground.
When Capt Amarinder Singh was CM he had announced to set up multi specialty hospital at village Peerjain but when Akalis came to power they did not take interest in the project. It was only after Congress MLA Kuljit Singh Nagra approached Punjab and Haryana High Court that the hospital was constructed.
Due to political conflict in municipalities, the towns give a picture of neglect. Though there is no major law and order problem in the district but police is force is short of manpower.
Fatehgarh Sahib SAD constituency in-charge and candidate from Fatehgarh Sahib, Didar Singh Bhatti, said, “SAD-BJP government had made all efforts for development of the district especially Sirhind and Fatehgarh Sahib.” He said that government has released money for laying sewerage and various other projects. Fatehgarh Sahib sitting Congress MLA Kuljit Singh Nagra, added that it was his efforts that he had got sanctioned sewerage, electricity related projects and some other projects in UPA government.
