Ludhiana: The Ludhiana city known as Manchester of India and business hub is facing situation like financial emergency as no cash was available in banks and ATM machines even on sixteenth day of demonization. The situation is likely to continue for next few days due to bank holidays on Saturday and Sunday and the cash is expected to arrive in city on Monday.
From last five days, no cash has been received at private banks including HDFC, ICICI, IDBI and others. The cash was available only at few branches of State bank of India, Punjab National Bank and some others. At private banks, the boards mentioning no cash withdrawal, no currency exchange welcome the customers. The banks only entertain the customers came to deposit cash in their accounts.
Out of total 55 deaths due to demonetszation, five were reported in Ludhiana only. On Wednesday, two people died in different areas.
An elderly man has suffered heart attack while standing in queue to withdraw cash while a factory worker has committed suicide due to shortage of cash.
Bhushan Sharma, a senior citizen said stands in queue outside banks from 9 am daily and after 11 am they were informed that no cash is available.
Ironically, the bank staff was not informed that when the cash will arrive. From Monday, I was told by bank manager that cash will come tomorrow but even after five days no cash is available.
Sunita Mehra, a housewife said that in the starting of next month they have to pay salaries, bills and purchase necessary items for household but due to non-availability of cash they are facing situation like financial emergency.
