Ludhiana: The Government Railway Police (GRP) have caught two persons while checking at Ludhiana railway station who were carrying the 2-kg of opium and 50 gms of poppy husk, informed GRP official Davinder Singh.
He further informed that he with his team raided coaches of the train and caught two persons involved in the racket of opium and poppy husk from the train. The raid was a part of GRP’s drive against drug mafia, who are using trains to ferry drugs to various places. It came out that drug mafias are now using trains to transport the drugs to the different destinations of the country.
Meanwhile, SHO Inderjit Singh said they carried out the checking drive in the trains mostly at night and early morning hours as the maximum criminal activities and drug movement take place during these hours only when authorities become less active. He added the accused admitted that they were carrying drug consignment to other states of the country also from long time.
The police found that both the accused were involved in the drug peddling from the past few years. During preliminary investigation, the accused changed several trains to reach city and used to board local trains to escape police checks but failed at Ludhiana railway station as while checking in the train both got caught by the police.
