‘The fine of Rs 2,650 was collected by the District Health Officer and Food Safety Officer with their team’
Ludhiana: The district health department officials on directions of Civil Surgeon, Ludhiana District, Dr. Renu carried out a checking drive for the public smoking and tobacco selling at different parts of the city with the help of the ACP (Crime) Gurvinder Singh who accompanied them in the drive on Thursday.
Around 19 challans of people who were smoking, selling tobacco and cigarette selling without installation of the warning boards that the cigarette is injurious to health at the different areas of city. They had also spread awareness regarding it at the different markets of the city so that people can know its pros and cons before inhaling them. The fine of Rs 2,650 was collected by the District Health Officer and Food Safety Officer with their team who carried out checking drive on Thursday. The checking was done in the Clock Tower area, Local Bus stand, Sherpur Chowk, Giaspura Chowk, Dholewal, Gill Chowk, Atam Park, ESI Hospital, and at the fountain chowk areas were cut by the health department team.
The guilty were challaned under the violation of COTPA Act (Cigarette and other Tobacco Products) Act, 2003. The health department officials spread awareness on the spots that no one should smoke and consume tobacco, if they would be caught publically than they would be heavily fined after being challaned. Moreover, they added that the owner of the shop or kiosk would also be fined if they were found selling tobacco and cigarette without installing warning board about smoking.
The District Health officer said that the sale of cigarette is not allowed within the 100 meters of educational institutions such as schools and colleges but in Ludhiana one can see the tobacco shops near the schools and colleges of the city.
