Jalandhar: The stage is set for 33rd edition of the Indian Oil Servo Surjit Hockey Tournament, which is all set tp begin on Friday at the local Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium, Burlton Park.
Union Minister for Social Justice & Empowerment and Punjab BJP chief Vijay Sampla would inaugurate the tournament on at 5.45 pm on Friday. Sandeep Jain, the General Manager of Indian Oil, would be the Guest of Honour.
The inaugural day, match in Men section would be played between RCF Kapurthala & Namdhari-XI while in women section, Punjab-XI would meet RCF, Kapurthala.
An annual tournament, Surjit Hockey tournament is organized by the the Surjit Hockey Society, Jalandhar to keep the name of ex-Olympian late Surjit Singh Randhawa alive.
Olympian Surjit, who was the former skipper of Indian Hockey Team lost his life in a fatal car accident near Jalandhar on January 7th, 1984 while fighting hard for up-liftment of the National Game of Hockey in the country.
Addressing a press conference, Kamal Kishor Yadav, the Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar, who is also the President of the Surjit Hockey Society said that the 33rd edition of the tournament would be played on league-cum-knockout basis on the polytan turf.
DC Yadav said that like last year, Asia’s largest and leading Maharatna Oil Company Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) Limited would be the main sponsor of the tournament. “The finalist would get a cash prize of Rs 9.50 lakhs whereas the Best player of the tournament would be awarded Mohinder Singh Tut Memorial Cash Award along with Gold Medal worth Rs 25,000 which has been sponsored by the Ranbir Singh Rana Tut”, he said.
Further, talking about attracting spectators, DC Yadav said that attractive prizes including Maruti Alto Car, Refrigerator and LCDs as prizes would be announce on the final day under. Spectators would be given coupons on day one while lucky draw would be held on the spot.
Iqbal Singh Sandhu, Organising Secretary of the tournament maintained that all the teams have been divided into four pools and winner team of the each pool would qualify for the semi finals, scheduled to be held on November 10.
Sandhu added that the 13 top ranking teams including last year’s Champion Indian Railways, Delhi & Runners up Indian Oil, Mumbai would take part in this eight day hockey bonanza.
Among other teams- Indian Railways, Delhi Indian Navy, Mumbai and winner of Punjab Police and ONGC Delhi match have been placed in Pool-‘A’, RCF Kapurthala, IndianOil, Mumbai and Namdhari-XI placed in Pool-‘B’, Punjab & Sind Bank Delhi, CRPF, Delhi and Army-XI, Delhi have been placed in Pool-“C” while Indian Air Force, Delhi, Punjab National Bank, Delhi and Air India, Mumbai have been seeded into Pool-’D” directly. Punjab police have to play knock out match against ONGC Delhi on 5th November, the winner would get place in league match.
“In the Women section, six top teams, namely Western Railways, Mumbai, Haryana-XI, North Central Railways, Allahabad, Punjab-XI, Rail Caoch factory, Kapurthala and Central Railways Mumbai would partcipate. All the six teams have been divided in two pools”, Sandhu added.
