Mukerian: As many as five persons were killed when an out of control Innova vehicle rammed into a roadside langar stall on the busy Jalandhar-Pathankot National highway on Friday afternoon.
While four persons were killed on the spot, one died later at a hospital in Jalandhar. The deceased were identified as Karnail Singh, Gandharav Singh, Ram Sharan all from Latihpur village near Mukerian, Darshan Singh of Alipur village and Jatinder Kumar.
Another injured Balwant Singh was also admitted in hospital with serious injuries. The gathering from the nearby villages had gone to partake of langar, when the tragedy stuck.
As per the information available, Ashish Kumar of Mahavir Enclave Locality of Ludhiana was going to Pathankot on his business tour, when he rammed the Innova into the langar stall going on in a temple of Khanpur village which is located on the highway.
SHO Mukerian Jaswinder Singh said that the victims were having langar under the shade of a tree close to the temple, when the Innova driver rammed the vehicle into the stall. “Though, the langar stall was situated at a distance from the highway but due to the high speed, it became difficult to control the Innova. The vehicle rammed into the people killing four on the spot”, he said.
It was learnt that the accident took place, as the driver dozed off while driving. The driver was arrested on the spot and a case was registered while the bodies were kept in the civil hospital.
