Bathinda: A day after Deputy Superintendent of Police (Detective), Ferozepur, Satpal Singh allegedly took a Faridkot-based journalist Devanand Sharma into illegal custody, Ferozepur SSP has ordered inquiry into the matter with also summoning the cop in question to appear before him.
The police action was initiated after a delegation of Faridkot media persons supported by advocates submitted memorandum to Faridkot SSP Nanak Singh, stating that the detention was illegal which also exposed the high-handedness of the DSP, with a mention that a failure in taking action against the “guilty” cop would force the media persons go on protest not only in the district but across the state.
Responding to the demand, Nanak Singh spoke to his Ferozepur counterpart and asked him to handle the case without any delay.
As per Sharma’s complaint, he was covering some activity of Ferozepur Police in Faridkot on Tuesday, when he was victimised.
“All policemen including the DSP were in civvies. They objected to my clicking of the photographs as part of my professional duty. The policemen including the DSP started abusing me and roughed me up even after I revealed my identity to them. They forcibly bundled me into the police vehicle and took me to their office at Ferozepur,” alleged Sharma.
“The DSP threatened me to implicate in a false case. But after I informed some of my fellows through telephone, who further brought it in the knowledge of Faridkot SSP, the DSP in question released me,” informed Devanand Sharma.
Meanwhile, the members of the Press Club Faridkot have demanded registration of a case against the DSP on the charge of illegal detention of the innocent journalist.
They termed the police official’s highhandedness as a violation of the human rights. In absence of a satisfactory action against the ‘guilty’ official, they would be forced to bring the matter to the notice of Press Council of India.
Meanwhile, Bathinda Press Club also extended support to Faridkot Press Club. The club president Rajay Deep and General Secretary Sachin Sharma stated that Bathinda Press Club would join the agitation if the police department fails to take action against the accused cop.
