Hoshiarpur: In a major swoop ahead of Independence Day, security agencies and the Punjab Police have busted a Khalistani terror module with links to NRIs and Pakistan’s notorious Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Hoshiarpur Police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested three Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) handlers, who were reportedly planning to target leading names in Punjab ahead of Independence Day celebration. These KLF handlers, however, have no criminal record.
Police have also booked two NRIs, based in US and Italy. It was revealed by the police that the NRIs-US based Harjap Singh Japi and Avtar Singh of Italy were in contact with three KLF handlers and were supplying money and weapons to them through illegal routes. A team of Hoshiarpur Police investigating the case maintained that they recovered pistols and explosives from the possession of the trio. Police acted on the secret information of Counter Intelligence Wing Punjab and nabbed the KLF handlers from different locations.
It was learnt that the police intercepted the calls of the three KLF handlers- namely Jaspreet Singh Jassa, Hardeep Singh Deepa and Kuldeep Singh. Inspector General (IG) Lok Nath Angra said: NRIs were sending money and weapons through different routes. The KLF handlers were planning to target top big names in Punjab. “The accused have been taken on police remand till August 2011,” he said. A case under Sections 121, 121 (A), and under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967 was registered against them at Hoshiarpur.
