“Skilled youth can find employment for themselves without falling prey to dubious agents
Nawanshahr: Of the three assembly constituencies falling in this district i.e. Balachaur, Nawanshahr and Banga, the first one can be termed as a “very poor cousin” of the latter.
In Banga segment unemployment and drugs rule the roost. Drugs menace is so rampant in the area that there is not even a single area in the town which does not boasts of drug addicts and drug sellers.
Tungal Gate and Father Gate mohallas and Langeri village are particularly notorious for drug menace. “Banga can be a ‘haven’ if just scourge of drugs is contained somehow,” opined Jatinder Kaur Moonga, District President of Mahila Youth Congress.
Moonga also rued waste of government funds for laying streets with interlocking tiles which are already in good shape. “Perhaps this is being done to benefit a prominent member of ruling party having business interests in making interlocking tiles,” alleged a resident. Banga residents otherwise have access to basic civic amenities like sewerage, water, roads, schools and hospitals etc.
Be it civic amenities, education, health, agriculture, irrigation or any other sector Balachaur stands nowhere. Despite poor basic amenities voters of this segment have been voting for same fellow, Chaudhary Nand Lal of SAD from four terms.
While Nand Lal was very accessible but he failed to address the sufferings of his people in twenty years despite being a Chief Parliamentary Secretary for nearly nine years in a stretch.
Keeping an eye on assembly polls, some development related works like laying of sewerage and providing piped water in Balachaur town have commenced recently.
Vital sectors like education and health are in utter neglect with schools having shortage of teachers and dispensaries running without doctors.
More and more people are falling prey to scourge of cancer in Tonsa area allegedly due to release of untreated effluents by factories in the open. “Stray animals are having a free run everywhere in the constituency such as on the roads, in the fields and in villages which have led to accidents and loss of life,” laments Darshan Singh Mattoo, state president of Kandi Sangharsh Committee.
“Let us start giving priority to human lives over animals,” maintained the area residents. The Kandi canal has not been dug up, “Instead of digging it up along the Shiwalik Hills, it has been laid in the plains with the help of pipes leading to total debacle of entire project with broken bridges at many places,” said Varinder Bajarh, a local social activist who does not rules out massive corruption in canal digging. The constituency is also facing scourge of drugs with many youth in the age group of 15-30 years falling prey to it. Ironically residents point fingers at people who are associated with ruling alliance for drug menace.
As far as Nawanshahr assembly segment is concerned, the area has seen lot of development but thanks to the remittances sent by NRIs in past couple of decades.
Despite availability of easy cash, industry has failed to make any foothold due to lack of rail connectivity in the area. Focal point presents a picture of neglect even after being set up decades ago.Raman Bhucher, running his venture of plastic pipes at focal point opined that unless the town gets better rail connectivity, industry will fail to grow and provide employment to youth.
Providing skill-based education to youngsters is need of area residents so to prevent them from falling into the trap of illegal travel agents.
“Skilled youth can find employment for themselves abroad without falling prey to dubious agents,” opined a school teacher. Basic civic amenities are reasonable though improvements in some areas are needed.
